The Quaint Micro-Neighborhood
Nippori feels completely separate from Tokyo. Unlike the extreme population density of Tokyo, Nippori is quite less dense. You can walk on small blocks and feel the neighborhood vibe here, which is simply not possible in most of Tokyo. Nippori, an area that sits in the shadow of Ueno Park, is known for artisinal items and has a nice local cuisine. If you wanted to take a stroll and feel what living in Japan is like, this is your best bet. Tennoji Park, a large complex, greets you immediately out of the station. There are basically zero Westerners in this area.
The Elevated Neighborhood
Nishi-Nippori, or South Nippori, feels like the downtown version of Nippori. It is slightly more populated, but it still maintains that "small center of town" feel. It has several high hills, and perhaps the most famous hill in Tokyo. This hill hosts "Fujimizaka" (Mt. Fuji View), the ONLY place in Tokyo from which Mount Fuji was visible, until the relentless march of urban development placed a building in its line of sight.
The Cultured Neighborhood
Originating from a community of artisans, Tabata has maintained its identity as a cultured neighborhood to the present day. Geographically, it is the most northern spot on the Yamanote Line.
