The Birdseye Neighborhood
Hamamatsucho, besides being the home of Tokyo Tower, is an interesting seaside neighborhood in its own right. Get a great morning walk to Tokyo Tower, stopping at some famous local spots such as the historical Kyu-Shiba-Rikyu Gardens, the unique Samurai Cruise of Tokyo Bay, and the impressive Zozoji Temple on the way. Then ascend the most famous, iconic tower in Tokyo and look down on catch a birdseye view of the places you have visited! This is one of the most unique and pedestrian-friendly spots in Tokyo, with such a diverse collective of destinations, from old to new.
The Multilevel Neighborhood
Shimbashi is both an unusual feat of architecture in that it is designed as a multilevel "playground." Underground walkways, raised walking platforms, elevated trains passing between buildings, and sky rises with sweeping views of Tokyo make Shimbashi as much of a vertical maze as it is a business district. Observe the clashes of architecture while exploring this neighborhood from the ground up. Bring a map to navigate this tiered labyrinth of a city center that seems more like something from a retro-futuristic mockup.
The Lantern Micro-Neighborhood
This lantern "city under the train tracks" comes to life every night. Rows upon rows of outdoor and indoor pubs and biergartens assemble every night in a mishmash underneath the traintracks, illuminating the night with the orange glow of their paper lanterns. Enjoy a relaxing night among friends (or friendly Tokyo strangers) in this bizarre but relaxing microcosm of food and drink. If there were ever a neighborhood that makes it easy to meet locals, this is THE one. Do not miss this "uniquely Tokyo" and cyberpunk-esque micro-neighborhood.
