The Serene Micro-Neighborhood
Komagome is a beautiful and quaint microcosm in Tokyo, home to two of the best parks in the city. Rikugien Garden is touted to be the most beautiful garden in all of Japan, and we do not disagree. It is simply unmatched in terms of rusticity and serenity. Enjoy a peaceful respite on the summit of the small hill that overlooks this otherworldly Eden of flowers. Walk through this incredible landscape at your pace and appreciate the beauty of Japanese gardening. Afterwards, check the Kyu-Furukawa Gardens, which feature an ornate western mansion in the middle of a wooded paradise.
The Vintage Micro-Neighborhood
Invoke your inner hipster in this micro-neighborhood of vintage shops aligned along a several block walking road, located off the beaten path. Functioning as the "Garment District" equivalent of Tokyo, Sugamo is THE place to buy vintage clothes, jewelry, ceramics, and trinkets. Chatting with the local obasans will reveal that Sugamo is a niche marketplace for souvenirs and gifts, from chopsticks to statuettes to lawn ornaments. In addition, this is a genuine market catered towards the locals without the standard touristy items and clothes one will find EVERYWHERE else.
The Sunset Micro-Neighborhood
Otsuka is a hidden gem. This neighborhood revolves around the sun, both literally and figuratively. The station's main exit has a beautiful street that faces due west and makes for incredible sunset photos as its light glistens off of the glass buildings. In addition, Sun Mall Otsuka is a charming outdoor pedestrian street with some great stores and its picturesque lanterns come alive during the twilight hours. This district has great food, craft beers, a speakeasy, and a mall INSIDE the train station. It is a relaxing neighborhood to catch an evening, do some souvenir shopping, and grab a beer.
